TRAIN (JR) FROM CENTRAL NAGOYA OR CENTRAIR AIROPORT
This route uses 2 different railway companies, so multiple tickets are required. For peace of mind always go for the Reserved Seat Option. Here's how you do it!

Nagoya Centrair Airport to Nagoya Station
  1. Domestic and International Arrivals Lobbies are next to each other on the 2nd floor.
  2. Walk straight through the arrival lobby and head up the escalators on the far side. This will bring you to the "Access Plaza"
  3. The Station is on the left. Purchase a ticket at the vending machines or ticket counter.
  4. The µ-Sky train (Pronounced Mu-Sky) is the fastest, getting you into Nagoya in 28 minutes. Meitetsu Nagoya Station is the third stop.

Transfer from Meitetsu Nagoya Station to JR Nagoya Station
  1. Arrival at Meitetsu Nagoya is on the basement level of the Meitetsu Dept Store. This is on the Sakura Dori (Northern side) of JR Nagoya Station.
  2. Follow the signs to JR Nagoya Station (3-4 minutes walk) and head to the ticket office on the left.
  3. At the ticket counter ask for a ticket to Iiyama using the "Wide View Shinano" express to Nagano.
  4. Currently there are hourly "Wide View Shinano" trains that depart on the hour between 07:00 and 16:00, and then at 40 minutes past the hour from 17:00 - 20:00
  5. After purchasing your ticket, head to platform 10.

JR from Nagoya to Nagano
  1. The basic trip here is from Nagoya to Nagano on the Limited Express Wide View Shinano.
  2. It is important to note that there are no food or beverage sales on any trains on this route, and as it will take up to 3 hours, picking up a few snacks at Nagoya Station is a good idea.
  3. The Wide View Shinano is a comfortable train the winds it's way up the valleys along the JR Chuo line, to Shiojiri, where it then switches to the JR Shinano Line to Nagano. It is however, what is called a furikoshiki train, which means the carriages tilt at corners so the train can maintain its speed. People who get severe motion sickness may have some discomfort.

Arrival Nagano
  1. Arrival at Nagano is generally at platform 7 (but there are exceptions). There is an elevator and escalator in the middle of the train up to main concourse.
  2. There are 2 types of trains that run on this line.
The Kagayaki Train is the fastest train. It only stops at Ueno, Omiya, Nagano and Toyama before the destination Kanazawa.
The Hakutaka Train heads also Kanazawa. It stops at more stations along the way. Again all trains carry on to Kanazawa, so that is listed as the destination on the train.
You can only take the Hakutaka Train on this line. The Kagayaki trains do not stop at Iiyama Station. There is only train per hour. Travel time is approx 11 min.
  3. On arrival at the Shinkansen ticket gate, check the platform number. You will need to insert tickets. (Remember to collect them again as you pass through the ticket gate.)
  4. Take the escalator up to the correct platform and find your assigned car.

Nagano to Iiyama
  1. Just a 11 minutes ride on the shikansen, it may be too short for a shinkansen fan.
  2. However, it takes more than 45 minutes on the local train Iiyama Line.
Arrival at Iiyama
  1. At Iiyama Station you arrive at platform 12 at 2/F. There are staircase and escalator at the middle of the platform.
  2. 1/F is the main concourse level. Exit through the Main Exit ticket gates (you don't get your tickets back here), head to Chikumashikawa Exit. There are staircase and escalator on the right. Take one of them down to the ground floor.
  3. Walk down to Bus Stop 1. There are 2 buses depart from bus stop 1, take the Express Tangram line. The bus stops at Madarao Kogen Hotel and Tangram Madarao. The bus connects the arrival time of the shinkansen from Tokyo.
