Haneda Airport to Hamamatsu Cho Station
  1. There are Monorail Stations at Terminal 1, 2, and the International Terminal. The Station order if going from the Airport to Hamamatsu Cho is Terminal 2 &β†’ Terminal 1 β†’ then International Terminal
  2. At the International Terminal the Monorail is on the same level as arrivals.
  3. Purchase a ticket to Hamamatsu Cho at the ticket window or from one of the machines, and head to the platform (remember to collect your ticket as you pass through the ticket gate)
  4. Make sure you get a "Kaisoku" or Rapid train as they go direct to Hamamatsu Cho bypassing all stations in between. From the International Terminal this can be a short as 13 minutes to the destination.
  5. The Cars do have some storage racks but are not really suitable for large ski/board bags which you may have to hold onto.

Transfer at Hamamatsucho Station - JR Local Line to Tokyo Station
  1. Hamamatsucho is a cramped station that always seems to be busy.
  2. You need to exit the ticket gates and find the JR counters. You can use either the south or central gates.
  3. At the JR Ticket counter buy a ticket all the way to Nagano. For peace of mind always go for the Reserved Seat Option. You will get either one or two tickets.
  4. Once you have your tickets, then go through the JR Ticket gates and make your way to platform 1 or 2 (they are together). Any train leaving from these platforms will get you to Tokyo Station. This is less than a 10 minute trip, but at rush hour it is extremely crowded

Arrival at Tokyo Station
  1. You'll be arriving at platform #3 or 4
  2. You need to get yourself to the Shinkansen Bullet Train platforms #20-23.
  3. Follow the icons on the signs with a Green Bullet train (not the blue one).
  4. On arrival at the Shinkansen ticket gate, check the platform number.
  5. At this ticket gate you will need to insert tickets again (remember to collect them again as you pass through the ticket gate)
  6. Take the escalator up to the correct platform and find your assigned car.
  7. Allow a minimum of 20 minutes between trains. More if it is your first time
  8. Note, the trains generally arrive about 15 minutes before departure, but need to be cleaned before you can board.

Tokyo to Nagano
  1. There are 3 types of trains that run on this line.
The Kagayaki Train is the fastest train. It only stops at Ueno, Omiya, before arriving at Nagano (the trains all continue on to Kanazawa so will display Kanazawa as the destination in the car window). Travel time is apprx. 90 minutes
The Hakutaka Train is a bit slower as it stops at more stations along the way. Again all trains carry on to Kanazawa, so that is listed as the destination on the train. Travel time is approx 100-120 min.
The slowest train is the Asama. The train stops at most stations between Tokyo and Nagano. It ends in Nagano, so the destination in the window of the train is Nagano. Travel time is 120-140min.
  2. Note that there is very limited storage space on these trains as most Japanese do not travel with large luggage (they send it on ahead via courier). If traveling with a lot of luggage (especially skis / boards) it can be difficult (and uncomfortable) to travel this way.
Arrival at Nagano
  1. At Nagano Station you arrive at ground level and need to go up to the ticket gate exit. If you are towards the rear of the train (cars #6 and below) there is a staircase to the fore. There is also an escalator near car number 10, and an elevator.
  2. One you get to the main concourse level there are 2 sets of gates. One connects to other JR Train lines and the other is the main exit.
  3. Exit through the Main Exit ticket gates (you don't get your tickets back here).
  4. Purchase a ticket for Myoko Kogen Station at Shinano Railway ticket machine

Nagano to Myoko Kogen
  1. This trip takes 45 minutes on the Kita-Shinano Line of Shinano Railway.
