Hakuba Valley is located about 250km North-West of Central Tokyo. There are many options for getting here, but some advance planning is recommended to make sure your trip is as smooth as possible.
Hakuba Valley is a large area, stretching some 35km from North to South. Shuttle buses run around the Ski Resorts during the winter months making getting to the resorts quite easy.
There are 10 ski resorts in the area united under the Hakuba Valley banner. All resorts can be accessed using the Hakuba Valley Lift Pass (valid for up to 14 days).
Choosing a place to stay should be largely dependent on your transport options. If you have a rental car, then you are free to stay anywhere in the valley. If you are using the shuttle bus service, then staying near a main hub should be high on your list. The two main hubs in Hakuba are Happo Information Center, and Hakuba Base Camp in Echoland. From these points you can easily get to pretty much all points in Hakuba.
For non skiers, there are plenty of activities to do in Hakuba. From learning to cook Japanese food, to bouncing on trampolines, or going for a snow shoe walk, there are activities for all ages and fitness levels.
Hakuba Valley is the most well equipped resort in the central Japan area. There are supermarkets and convenience stores, banks and ATMs, and medical clinics to treat minor ailments and injuries.
There are also a many wining and dining options. If you want to go full Japanese, then there are Sushi, Teppanyaki, Izakaiya, Yakiniku, as well as a number of noodle restaurants. There are also plenty of western options, with pub fare, French, Italian, and family restaurants.
